Glossary of The Age of Names

The terms this world runs on, in the novel's own sense of them. These definitions state only what Book One makes available. Later books may enlarge, contest, or correct them — mystery is not a defect this glossary exists to repair.

Two things are worth noticing before the list. First, almost every definition here refuses a convention: Aura is not a power level, Guardian is not proof of wisdom, Ancient is not a guarantee of wisdom, and Actualization does not make anyone complete. Second, the rule underneath all of it is that recognition creates access, but it does not create permission.

Aura
The living presence through which a person or being acts magically. Aura is not a score, a fuel tank, an element assigned at birth, or a measure of worth. It develops through body, training, original composition, injuries, loyalties, duties, repeated practices, and choices.
Aura pressure
The perceptible weight or texture of Aura released into a place. It can warn that something enormous has entered the room. It cannot say what that being knows how to do, how long the body can continue, or who will win. A master may feel nearly quiet; a wounded being may leak terrifying pressure while holding almost no safe reserve.
Magic
The deliberate shaping of Aura into a particular change. Its smallest grammar is: notice, choose, shape, spend, and receive the answer. The target keeps its own nature, history, defences, and capacity to refuse, and the caster's body conducts the cost. Magic is not an intelligent servant that fulfils a vague wish.
Relational address
A history compressed until reality recognises an answering pattern: voice, oath, wound, desire, practice, memory, and the people still able to contradict it. A legal name may lead to the building; a relational address reaches for who might answer the door.
Guardian Door
A threshold that opens in answer to oath, blood, power, recognition, or another practised condition. It may hide inside an ordinary lintel, civic wall, station, or service passage. Recognition at a threshold is not the same as permission to cross it.
Covenant
A witnessed relation of terms, access, responsibility, and limit. A covenant is not made ethical merely because someone once agreed to it: the conditions around the first answer matter, and so do later changes in power, knowledge, danger, and the ability to refuse.
Merging
A sustained joining through which two beings share access, sensation, memory, capacity, or action. It is not inherently good or evil, and not automatically mutual simply because both beings remain present. Its moral direction depends on consent, alternatives, witness, purpose, answerability, the ability to stop, and whether separation remains real.
Manifestation
The distinctive way a being's Aura has learned to express a function — coherent self-expression, not an elemental class. Aura remembers not merely what happened, but how a person repeatedly answered what happened. Two Guardians can serve the same threshold for centuries and become radically different.
Actualization
A crossing in which a person's Aura and practised way of relating become more fully expressed. It is not the discovery of one predetermined ideal self, and it does not make a person complete, wise, or morally superior.
Invested law
Aura given durable form within a place, weapon, office, road, practice, or realm, so reality keeps answering that presence across time and distance. Investment is not free power: what is invested becomes less portable and creates another place where it can be resisted, altered, inherited, or damaged.
Magus
A person capable of directed magical action through Aura. The term describes capacity and training, not character, allegiance, or rank. The body delivers, the will directs, and the reserve pays — treating the body as disposable is itself a dangerous magical education.
Guardian
An actualized person in a long civic vocation concerned with crossings, defence, balance, memory, and the conditions of choice. Guardian is neither a species nor proof of wisdom. Power without vocation becomes private capacity; vocation without answerability becomes rank preserving itself.
Ancient
One of the beings whose long lives and deep Aura can impress laws, habits, or sustaining conditions upon reality. “Ancient” is not a guarantee of age-earned wisdom, moral authority, or rightful rule. Their scale makes their unexamined impulses consequential.
Amulet of Origins
An ancient covenant archive. It witnesses and preserves terms between people, places, roads, and weapons. Later rulers treated it as a badge of command, but command is not its first purpose, and it does not make anyone obey.
Underlines
Hidden routes carried through and beneath the visible city: Guardian roads, rail loops, ink gates, civic hinges, bridge roads, conduits, and memory tracks. An underline is never only a line on a map — its reality includes the bodies, work, access, and maintenance required to use it.
The Keep
The hidden American anchor beneath Lower Manhattan: fortress, school, hospital, arsenal, shelter, workplace, archive, and political institution. Its formal halls depend on service routes, kitchens, water, maintenance, clerks, healers, porters, and workers its official maps do not always preserve.
Crimson City
A red-gold hidden realm holding some of the most stable bridge roads between Earth and the Netherworld. It is neither heaven nor the natural owner of every crossing, and it can preserve passage while mistaking its administration of passage for ownership.
Netherworld
A realm — not hell, and not anyone's natural property. Much of it has been colonized by Horde power, but colonization is not total identity: peoples, settlements, roads, and possibilities remain beyond the Pale Dominion's complete control.
The Horde
Not merely an army, species, or outside corruption. The Horde is surrendered personhood made contagious: the reduction of a soul, family, institution, or people to one devouring idea. Its power lies in making surrender orderly, beautiful, useful, or inevitable.

The complete Glossary of the Veil, along with the Cast of Characters and the illustrated maps of hidden New York and the Keep, is printed in the book. Entries that would give away the plot are deliberately left out of this page.
