Frequently asked questions
The Age of Names — questions and answers
Straight answers about the book, the series, and where to buy it. Nothing here spoils an ending.
What is The Age of Names about?
New York, 1939. Winter Garcia is eighteen, works a newspaper desk on Mott Street, and wants City College because he wants power to explain itself. Then his school ledger forgets him, his mirror goes black, and beneath Manhattan a set of roads no official map records begins to wake. It is an adult historical urban fantasy about names, records, memory, and the difference between being protected and being claimed.
Is it part of a series?
Yes. It is Book One of The Pale Dominion Series. It tells a complete arc of its own, and the series continues. No title or release date for the next book is announced, and this site will not imply one before it is confirmed.
Does it end on a cliffhanger?
There is a dedicated answer to this, written so you can decide before you start, and it does not spoil the ending.
Is it a romance?
Not in the genre sense. There is attraction between Winter and Belgrad, and the novel treats it as a problem to be examined rather than a reward to be delivered — Winter is eighteen, Belgrad lives inside the body from which the desire arises, and the book says plainly that no answer given under such terms could be free. If you want a romance where the powerful being's devotion settles the matter, this is not that book.
Is it for adults or young adults?
It is an adult novel. The protagonist is eighteen, but the book is written for adult readers and handles violence, coercion, grief, and period antisemitism and racism directly.
Do I need to know anything about 1939 New York first?
No. The novel carries its own context, and it prints a Historical Note setting out exactly which events are documented and which are invented. If you like reading the history first, there is a page for that.
How does the magic work?
Magic follows relation — names, wounds, promises, duties, and doors. It is not an element assigned at birth and it is not a score. The governing rule is that recognition creates access, but it does not create permission.
Can I read a sample before buying?
Yes. The opening chapter is on this site, free and ungated, with no signup.
Where can I buy it, and in what formats?
It is available as a Kindle ebook and as a paperback, and the Kobo edition is live. The where-to-buy page always reflects the editions that are actually verified — no retailer is listed there before its purchase page has been checked.
Is there an audiobook?
Not yet. When an audio edition exists and can be bought, it will appear on the where-to-buy page and not before.
Who is LC Vale?
LC Vale is the author of The Age of Names and the pen name under which The Pale Dominion Series is published.
